Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction, fantasy and horror. It is a delicious nonsense that combines an alternative history with gloriously ornate devices and wondrous machines – such as airships – usually powered mechanically, by air or by steam. With an aesthetic quality that never fails to delight, stylish outfits, often including gauntlets and goggles, it brings to life the romance of a fictional parallel universe whose roots are usually firmly placed in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
The popularity and fascination with Steampunk, along with its sub-genres, such as cyber-punk, is growing at an phenomenal rate throughout all media. Films are in the pipeline, Disney as well as other major players are producing video games. As well as influencing numerous writers, myself included, hugely talented artists are producing stunning work influenced by the Steampunk movement.
